The Final Tally & Write-Up!
Whew, I can’t believe how long it took me to assemble all this! Unfortunately, real life has a way of getting in the way of other hobbies, but here it is at long last.
A few notes:
Whew, I can’t believe how long it took me to assemble all this! Unfortunately, real life has a way of getting in the way of other hobbies, but here it is at long last.
A few notes:
- All the text I've included is from tweets, comments on batchofkindness.com, or posts on Facebook or Tumblr. All contained the #batchofkindness hashtag, which has been removed for ease of reading, unless it was part of a sentence.
- After thinking about it, for the same reason, I removed Twitter handles/Tumblr account names, etc.; it’s just more visually appealing if it’s not cluttered up with a bunch of @’s and #’s. It’s not as if Benedict is on social media and is going to follow any of us anyway. ;)
- If I left anyone’s acts of kindness out, I profoundly apologize, but know that your #batchofkindness still had the intended effect of making someone’s day just a bit brighter. Please remember that I’m human and this is the first year I’ve done this, so I’m still learning.
A final thought...many people have said that we should do these things every day. In an ideal world, that would be the case. However, the level of impassioned giving and the sense of community felt during things like #batchofkindness, Boxing Day, Christmas, etc. sadly can't withstand the wear and tear of everyday life. We are human; we have bad days, we grouse at our loved ones, we are curt with the cashier at the grocery store. It's easier to ignore the little annoyances and imperfections of life when we feel a sense of community behind our kindness (it's Christmas, it's the first day of school, it's so-and-so's birthday, etc.). Nobody can be kind, generous, giving and perfect 100% of the time. It's just like when you finally recover after being ill...you think, "I'll never take for granted again the ability to eat/breathe/get up and walk around." And yet, after a few days of feeling back to normal, we do take it for granted. We're human. Nobody can sustain that heightened awareness of gratitude and giving over the long haul. And that's what, in my opinion, makes days like #batchofkindness all the more worthwhile.
Lastly, I have printed all the documents on the linked pages and will be posting them to Benedict's agency in London. I have no idea if Benedict will read the #batchofkindness booklet or even see it. He is insanely busy and, I imagine, has more than enough reading material, work-related and otherwise. My hope is that it will at least get into his hands and he’ll at least flip through it and see the thoughtfulness and compassion displayed by his fans from all over the world. And even if he doesn’t, guys…we still did all of these wonderful, fantastic, insanely kind things. We still made countless people smile for one day.
And we’re going to do it all again next year.
Much love to you all,
Michelle xx

Disclaimer: I am just a fan and am not in any way connected to or affiliated with Benedict Cumberbatch.
The Batch of Kindness campaign was inspired by his words, but conceptualized and carried out by his fans.
(Basically, if somebody screws up and offends somebody, don't blame Benedict.)
